The Golden Gate Quartet

The Golden Gate Quartet was formed in 1934 and were one of the earliest groups on record and their close harmony style. Their music was hugely popular in the 30s and 40s when they enjoyed several hits with wartime protest and gospel songs. With changes in membership the quartet remains active.

Blind Barnabas

The track that features some great proto rap, is about the blind beggar Bartimaeus that was healed by Jesus. Jesus and his disciples, were leaving Jericho. A blind man, Bartimaeu was sitting by the roadside begging and began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Jesus asked him: "What do you want me to do for you?” And Bartimaeus said to him: "Rabbi, let me recover my sight  And Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him on the way.
In my God's bible in the book of James
Christ was a-healin' the crippled and the lame
He gave to the poor and the needy bread,
Healin' the sick and a-raisin' the dead

Well when he came to Galilee
He passed by a man who could not see
The man was blind, he was blind from birth;
They tell me that his name was Blind Barnabas

Well old Blind Barnabas stood on the way blind
Blind Bartinabas stood on the way
Well old Blind Barnabas stood on the way, cryin'
Oh Lord have mercy on me
